 TOWNS & VILLAGES Of LESVOS

POLICHNITOS

According to hearsay, Polichnitos took its name from the words "Polla ihni" (meaning many small villages). Apparently many small villages located on the coast, had to move inland and away from the sea, because of the raids by Saracen pirates. The present day Polichnitos, although relatively near the coast and the wonderful beaches, it is surrounded by hills, making the town invisible from both the Gulf of Kalloni and the Aegean Sea.

Imposing noble, neo classical mansions and public buildings, stone laid streets, the Church of Agios Georgios with the three tier bell fry at the centre, the old olive press which is now converted to a Culture / Conference Centre and its hospitable people make Polichnitos a very special town. At the tall chimney of the converted old olive press, you will be able to see the most famous resident of the town.

It has also been blessed with the hottest Thermal Springs in Europe, which now provide modern bath facilities for therapeutic and relaxing sessions. These days you can book to have a professional massage at the end of your hot bath, guaranteed to make you feel brand new at the end of it.

Polichnitos as a provincial town it offers all support services necessary to the area (Post Office, Bank, Health Centre, Pharmacies, Schools, Grocery Stores, Shops, Cafeterias, Bars) for a comfortable life style.

The local economy is based on agriculture and tourism. A very active Women’s Agro Co-operative ensures that tradition in gastronomy continues. Their products are available to buy at their own shop at the top of the town.

Recently the whole region of Polichnitos has been recognised as a destination for alternative or ecological tourism, since nature has richly endowed the region. So in the spring and autumn birdwatchers and walkers arrive to explore nature at its best.

If you wish to stay in the area the nearest hotels and rented accommodation is in Vatera and Skala Polichnitos.

Places to Visit:

  • St. George’s Church
  • The Folklore Museum
  • The Thermal Springs
  • The Women’s Co-Op Shop
  • The Hibiscus Real Estate Agency Office, just around the left corner from the Post Office and almost opposite the Town Hall

MOMENTS in the LIFE OF POLICHNITOS

The New Greece (in its present state) is a relatively new Nation, which still remembers very vividly the oppressive 400 year occupation of our lands by the Ottomans (present day Turkish) and the uprising of the 25th of March 1821 which led to our liberation.

On the same day every year, all over Greece, we are proud to remember and pay homage to those that died so we can be free today. At the start of the uprising the motto that fortified them and kept them going in the long unequal battles was “Freedom or Death”.

This is how the people of Polichnitos remember and make sure that future generations will never forget…..
