 TOWNS & VILLAGES Of LESVOS

PLOMARI

On exiting Mytilene to the west and past the location of the “Larissian stones”, relics of a Pelasgian acropolis or fortress, clearly visible high above the road, the public road turning left leads to the villages of Evergetoula, Gera and Plomari. At the first small village and port of Dippi a large olive press greets you as well as the underrated reedy marsh area of Dippi Larsos, a heaven for migrant and indigent birds. Archaeological remains have been found here dating 2800 B.C.

At the Evriaki beach further down villas and hotels amongst orchards adorn the coastline. In the old days the village of Perama was a centre of activity, with boats small and large, ferrying people and goods across. These days the small boats that ferry people to Koundouridia on the opposite side of the Gulf preserve a sense of nostalgia for the past and the opportunity to visit little tavernas that are part of the discovery experience.

Further south on the coast Plomari is built amphitheatrically around the Sedunda gorge. It has a glorious historical past to preserve and it guides the traveller as a living museum through time full of images and memories. Cobblestone streets and folk architecture preserve the traditional texture of the town, while restored industrial facilities (olive-presses, soap-refineries, tanneries etc.) these days converted to museums and cultural centres, reflect a move towards progress and the development of the area. The hospitality of the locals is apparent everywhere; cultural exhibitions of great interest are held frequently; Robust night life fills the summer nights with energy and music, while the famed local ouzo and tasty appetisers at the seaside tavernas lead to high-spirited ouzo symposiums.

Nature endowed the region with diverse landscapes pleasing to the eye. Lush vegetation is circling the villages of the area that cling to the mountainous slopes and the enchanting beaches and coves. The most well-known and frequented beaches are the ones located at Agios Isidoros and Agia Barbara. The beaches at Tarti and Melinda are more secluded and the cove at Drota should not be missed.  Many sizeable hotels and rented apartments in the area offer great scope for holidaymakers. Entertainment, beach sports and activity adventures are part of the experience.
